Book Bytes - 7

1. The book, 'Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy' was written by Isaac Newton. The book was a super success.

2. 'Two Treatises of Government' was written by the English philosopher, John Locke. It was published in 1689. The American Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution were influenced by the book.

1. 'The Social Contract' was written by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1762. This book influenced the makers of the United States Constitution as well as the French Revolution.

2. The Bronte sisters, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte all rose to fame with their novels. Charlotte's masterpiece was 'Jane Eyre'. Emily's masterpiece was the tremendous 'Wuthering Heights' and Anne's famous books were 'Agnes Grey' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'.

1. The novel, 'Frankenstein' was first written as a short story by Mary Shelley on the suggestion of poet, Lord Byron. Lord Byron had suggested to his friends that each of them should write a ghost story!

2. 'The Last of the Mohicans' was written by James Fenimore Cooper. It was published in 1826. James Cooper highlighted the dignified and noble side of the native American Indians in the book.

1 Ralph Waldo Emerson was the author of 'Nature'. In this book, the author advises the reader to reject materialism and organised religion. He exhorts the reader to seek the divine through nature.

2. J.K.Rowling, the creator of 'Harry Potter' was the first author to earn a billion dollars.

1. The masterpiece novel, 'The Scarlet Letter' was written by the American novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was published in 1850. The protagonist is Hester Prynne. It is a novel about sin, guilt, repentance and pride.

2. The book, 'Civil Disobedience' was written by Henry Thoreau, an American author in the 19th century. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi used the technique of Civil Disobedience given in the book to win freedom for India. The crux of the book is that unjust laws should be broken!

1. Sanam Maher's debut book, 'The sensational life and death of Qandeel Baloch' pieces together the story of Pakistan's first social media star, Qandeel Baloch, who was murdered by her brother in the name of honour in July 2016.

2.Amitabha Bagchi's novel, 'Half the Night is Gone' won the 2019 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.

2. Charles Dickens, the great English novelist wrote the classic novels - 'Oliver Twist', 'David Copperfield', 'Nicolas Nickleby', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Pickwick Papers' and 'Little Dorrit'.

Saradindu Bandyopadhyay was a well known Indian Bengali-language writer. His most famous creation is the fictional detective, Byomkesh Bakshi. He died before he could complete the last of the Byomkesh Bakshi mysteries, 'Bishupal Badh' (The Killing of Bishupal) and so perfect seems the murder described in that story that no one till now has been able to solve the mystery. Saradindu took that secret with him.

Famous Allegories

Allegory is a narrative wherein abstractions are made concrete for the purpose of effectively communicating a moral. It is also called an extended metaphor in which characters, actions and scenery are symbolic.
John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is the greatest allegory in English Literature. George Orwell's '1984' and 'The Animal Farm' are political allegories. Another famous allegory is Edmund Spenser's 'Faerie Queene'.

Hilary Mantel is the author of the famous books, 'Wolf Hall' and 'Bring up the Bodies'.
'Wolf Hall' is a historical fictionalised biography documenting the rapid rise to power of Thomas Cromwell  in the court of Henry VIII through to the death of Sir Thomas More. The novel won both the Man Booker Prize in 2012 and the National Book Critics Circle Award, too.

Book Byte 17

Paul Beatty's 'The Sellout' is a satirical novel, which went on to win The Booker in 2016. It also won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The novel is set in Los Angeles, USA and is narrated by Bonbon, who belongs to the Afro-American community. The novel revolves around a protagonist who grows artisanal marijuana and watermelons. Paul Beatty is the first American to win the Booker.
