FIRST RAYS( FLASH FICTION)

*First Rays*    Jenny woke up as the first rays of the sun fell on her face. She got up and showered. She then prepared 'breakfast' for 'her family'. As she sat down to eat, she noticed the orange-red sun descend into the horizon. She then realised that something was 'amiss'. She glanced at the square clock above the main door of her house. The clock struck six times. Perhaps, it was 'evening'.  Dr.S.Padmapriya

The First Chapter of 'The Fiery Women'

CHAPTER 1 The Village of D’Salem ‘When l watch flickering lights, In distant homes, From my window seat on a train, Or when I watch them, As I walk spiritedly under an umbrella, Or in a two-, Or four wheeler in a rain; The great spirit of wonder, Gives birth to the dawn of realisation- Every human and home is different, This is most evident, Everyone is searching for their Destiny.... This was the poem that Preetha’s elegant mind was conjuring up as she walked towards her friend’s home. Our young protagonist had just shifted gears and ----- had made the transition from being a painter of colors to a painter of words! The year was 1925. Twenty-two years later, India would become an independent nation. The people of Hindustan had already started to receive the fruits of intellectual freedom. Rabindranath Thakur, the Indian philosopher-poet had already  won  the  Nobel  Prize in  Literature  in  1913 - inspiring  a  large  number  of fellow Indians to pick up the pen and turn into happy

Poem: Character is Destiny

Character is Destiny  Character is destiny, He is great, The real man, the immortal man, Who stands up for truth, Even in the midst of brutes, Who stands up as a beacon of benevolence, When all around him, There is violence. Who believes in the immortality of justice, Even when he is bulldozed under an edifice. Who practices non-violence, Even when pelted with a volley of violence, Who is honest, Even in the midst of humbling poverty, Caring not for the taunting of a few or majority, Who struggles determinedly, works hard, Even when he remains unheard. Who is generous,       But not to a fault, Who is magnanimous, Who returns good for evil, Who is full of gratitude, Even in the midst of ineptitude, Who is chaste, Not succumbing to temptations, infinite, Who unceasingly improves himself, With no more desire than to outshine himself, Who sympathizes, Expecting no sympathy, Who helps and is kind, Truly a gem of the rarest kind, Who is punctual, Unmindful that life is a process, eventual,

Poem: A Love Offering

I offered you myself, You took me unto thyself, You kissed me reverently, On my lips, Our lives became full of bliss, You said,  'Your eyes are beautiful, Your skin is rough but even, Your lips are dark and deep', Appreciation of little things, Made me very happy, You share my thoughts, My emotions and dreams, So now you share me! Dr.S.Padmapriya

Poem: Navarathri

*Navarathri* Nine nights, Of splendour, Embedded in the psyche and reality, Of the India Wonder! Three Goddesses are propitiated, Durga, Saraswathi and Lakshmi, To fulfil our needs, We pray to the trinity. On Ayudha puja*, Tools and equipments, All are given rest,  For the work they do, On other days of the year, When they put in their best. On Saraswathi puja,* The Goddess of learning is eulogised, The Epitome of knowledge is our pride, Books are granted freedom for a day, To all people especially children, It feels like a wonderful holiday. Durga Pujo* is done in a manner, Best possible by our Bengali brethren, The prowess of Kali ma is uncountable, The human power is infinitesimal! Vijayadashami* is a memorable day, For when all culminates then people say, ‘Start to do the new, They will bear wings, All your dreams will come true, There is much work to do'. Dr.S.Padmapriya

Some interesting work ethics of some famous writers

Interesting work discipline of some famous writers Simone De Beauvoir     She would work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then from five to nine in the evening. C.S.Lewis    He would work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. He would then work from five to seven in the evening. Haruki Murakami     He works from four in the morning till lunch, then trains for marathons in the afternoons. He believes that writing requires both physical and mental health. Amos Oz     He walks into the desert in the early morning to absorb its silences and this keeps him going during the long hours at his desk. Gunter Grass    He would begin to work at 10 a.m. after having his breakfast. He would have his breakfast, while listening to music. He would work till one and would again work for a couple of hours till seven in the evening.

A Poetry Byte

The Idyll The Idyll is not a distinct species of poetry; it may take the form of a short lyric, a longer poem, a passage in a play, epic, ballad or any other kind of poem. The Idyll derives its name from a Greek word meaning, 'a little picture'. It is a description generally in verse of some scene or event, which is strikingly picturesque and complete in itself.  The idyll has its origin with classical poets like Theocritus and Virgil. They wrote pastoral idylls. A pastoral idyll avoids the mournful tone of a pastoral elegy and confines itself to the description of placid and happy existence.  The two important characteristics of the idyll are its brevity and pictorial effect. One of the earliest idylls in English is Marlowe's 'The Passionate Shepherd to his Love'. Milton's L'Allegro can be considered a series of idylls - each one a picture of happy life. Wordsworth's 'Lines Written in March' is a beautiful idyll depicting a spring scene in Engla

Poem: Pure Heart

Only one power have I, From it,  I never part, And that is being, A pure heart! S.Padmapriya

Poem: O' krishna!

‘O' Krishna! A Poem Every day, challenges gush, Into the lake of our lives.... From an unseen divine waterfall, Comes streaming in - stones, pebbles, Sand particles, insects and amphibians - Debilitating us! Still, bringing with them, Life affirming wondrous waters! 'O' Krishna, is it one of your many tricks? Do you love to see people suffer? Or do you make us suffer so that We know you? What is ‘Leela’ for you, Is for the ‘Jeevatmas’, Playing with their hearts! Today is your birthday, What gift can a mortal give you? But I have not come to give, I have come to supplicate! Fill our human lives with more joy, And fewer shadows of pain! You are the river of compassion, The God, who grants infinite boons, 'O' Krishna!  Dr.S.Padmapriya

Poem: Undying

Undying  An undying spirit, Which strives to attain merit, The sense of duty and purpose, The sensibility of a mission, Intermingling with the depths of the soul, A clear conscience, Directing light on our path, The Path, The undying path of truth, An undying voice, An undying virtue, An undying day, A day of peace, The undying spirit of righteousness. Dr.S.Padmapriya

Report Writing

Reports can be on any subject. The main characteristics are that they are always factual, verifiable and aimed at people with interest in the area. The passive form of verb is generally used.

Article: Collective Responsibility

*Collective Responsibility*  An article by Dr.S.Padmapriya  Blaming appears to be the oldest habit of human beings. Most of us detest taking the blame for any ill, the society faces. In general, individuals don’t believe that he or she is in any way connected to any economic or social problem. Poverty is a problem for the government to solve. Female infanticide or casteism is a problem for the government. Is the individual in no way to blamed for the ills in society? The politicians are blamed for all the ills in society. Politicians don’t come from Jupiter or Saturn. They come neither from the heavens nor from hell. Politicians are made of flesh and blood like the rest of us. Politicians come from our societies. Politicians and leaders influence the society and society produces politicians. There is a mutual relationship between society and politicians. The ills of our society are our collective responsibility. As a people, as a nation, as a human race, WE OUGHT TO TAKE COLLECTIVE RES

Poem: God's Love

God’s Love God’s love will never fail, Whatever be the weather, Trust God and set sail, In the most perilous seas, When our ship is caught up in a gale! He is the loving father, In virtue and kindness, a brother, He does not bother about your skin colour, He does not bother about your gender, He does not bother about ideology, He loves everyone for their individuality, He does not ask for your region or religion, He does not care for your caste or creed, As you proceed on your lonely journey! So, look ahead with fortitude, You shall never be a destitute, His gentleness will be your prop, Goodness is God! Dr. S. Padmapriya

What is a memoir?

Memoir A memoir is any nonfiction narrative writing based in the author's personal memories. The assertions made in the work are thus understood to be factual. While memoir has historically been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography since the late 20th century, the genre is differentiated in form, presenting a narrowed focus. A biography or autobiography tells the story "of a life", while a memoir often tells the story of a particular event or time, such as touchstone moments and turning points from the author's life. The author of a memoir may be referred to as a memoirist or a memorialist. Source: Wikipedia

The Autobiography of a Neem Tree

The Autobiography of a Neem Tree  I am a Neem tree. My scientific name is Azadiracta indica. I was born in a dilapidated compound in the Egmore area of Madras in 1985. I am an Indian. We don't survive in cold climates. The hot and humid Indian climate is our favourite climate. This is our home.    The beauty of India is a sensory delight to us. We love the myriad colours of India. The fragrant rosewood and sandalwood trees are my close friends.   We love to contribute to everyone's health. We have been used by generations of Indians to kill bacteria and fungi. Farmers love us! Our leaves are the most potent insecticides and fungicides. The bark of Neem is used in a wide variety of medicinal preparations. Our flowers are used in Indian cooking. Our wood can be used as firewood, too.    We are very useful. My whole community serves the variegated interests of mankind. Yet, human beings scarcely recognise our need for water. It is summer time and we feel thirsty (just like you!)

The General(Poem)

The General The brave General, Marched on and on! Seeing the formidable enemy, His army became forlorn. Turning their back on the General, They disappeared on that morn. The brave General, Marched on and on. He turned and to his profound shock, Found that his men were gone! The brave General marched on and on, Seeing the General with his serene visage, The enemy weakened with the fear, That they would be mercilessly torn. Expecting to see a great army in a while, The enemies decided to leave and be gone. The brave General vanquished the fleeing men with ease, Marched on and on. Back home to a hero's welcome, He thanked his soldiers in front of all, His men shed tears, Someone in the crowd said, "What brave men we have!" "Yes," replied the brave General, "Without them,  Would I have been able to march on?" S.Padmapriya

An Article on English Poetry in India

Poetry , a form of literature which uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to communicate, is beyond just that. In my opinion, poetry is an art form just like dance or music or sculpting or drama or cinema or painting.   A writer uses the canvas of words to communicate his ideas. One page of beautiful poetry can contain greater wisdom than a thousand pages of prose. This is because of the unique propensity of poetry to lend itself to multiple interpretations unlike prose, where from, only one or a few meanings can be deciphered. The second propensity of poetry is that unlike in prose, thought and language cannot be separated.   In my opinion , a poem springs forth from deeply felt intense emotions. It may be intense joy or intense sorrow or even intense anger or even a combination of different intense emotions. English Poetry :         The history of ‘ English Poetry’ is long and glorious. Today, the English language has spread far and wide and every country has writ

A short Story and a poem on Dementia!

1.My Father, who was not there (This short story is dedicated to the care-givers of Dementia patients)      My father was my best friend. He was somebody on whom I had relied upon, in almost every situation. He was the one who gave me great advice so that I could succeed in almost every aspect of my life. My mother had died many years ago and he was the only one I had. He had helped me to choose the companies that I worked with. He was always the first one to accept my eccentric choices in life. He was the apple of my eye.  He was a doting father.        He had retired from service, ten years ago. Every day, he had the habit of waiting for me to return from work. He was always there, at the gates of our small bungalow – waiting for me. But today, my father was not there at the place, where he would be waiting for me.Today, there was no one, waiting to receive me at the gates of my house. I was flummoxed because he had never missed this routine of waiting for me at the gates of our hou
